I have to admit I love the feel of this painting. I had the music cranked up and I was totally lost in the shapes and movement of everything. I loved the photo reference of the calf with his tongue in its nostril. I used to be totally grossed out by this watching cows do this on the farm. Now that I am a mom of two boys, nothing phases me.
I have been studying the Notan way of painting.(Wikipedia) Nōtan (濃淡) is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark as they are placed next to the other in art and imagery. I did not sketch out the dark at light values before I painted this, but I am going to start working more with the placement of these areas in a painting.
Hope to share more as I study the Notan way.

I work with notan too. I is a great way to keep values in there right places. I have an app on my phone called value viewer that turns my photos into notams . It is very cool.
I really enjoyed going through your blog and seeing you wonderful work. Thanks for the blog visit.
Thanks for the info on Notan. I love your cow paintings. This one is great, as always.
Thanks so much for visiting Dori! I hope to practice and learn more about Notan. The value viewer will really come in handy, thanks for the suggestion! Looking forward to your next post!
Thanks Pat, I enjoy painting the cows. I guess I studied them a lot on the farm. I did not realize some day all those stare downs would pay off.
